Daum’s New Web Search

Posted by Channy Yun

Daum released the beta of new web search service. Until now Daum has outsourced Google’s serch engine for web search. But, mos of korean portal has various own database, so if an user query a keyword, it firstly shows search results internal database such as news, blog, image and Q&A in order. A result of web search is almost final section in screen and most of users cannot recognize its existence.

Only Naver has own search robots crawling web sites and offered search service in Korea. Daum’s new challenge seems that they want to get independent technologies for search engine.

DAUMOA, the web search robot of Daum, is gathering web documents from all over the world for better search services. These web documents are amassed from other related web pages that refers to its original web pages. Then the robot, or the web crawler pulls out some useful information.

Naver has over 70% search market share in Korea, Daum is 2nd. with 15%. Until now Daum has focused on user-based community, but they found out their mistakes after the growth of Naver’s search and Cyworld’s personal social media. Daum wants to get back to first position again with new beta services and tvPot, UGC video service.

Interesting… When you say ‘Only Naver has own search robots crawling web sites and offered search service in Korea.’ – why is it only Naver? I am surprised.

Martin, there are many companies to have web crawling technology in Korea, but they didn’t offer public web search services. I missed, so there are three web search services in Korea. Of course, yahoo!, google and msn are excepted.
